What is Spiritual companionship?
Spiritual companionship - also known as spiritual direction - is the art and practice of creating a brave space where storytelling and deep listening are present, a sacred space where the Spirit’s wisdom is sought. The term spiritual companionship is preferable to spiritual direction, because the Spirit does the work of directing while the seeker and companion deepen their relationship with the Divine together.
Spiritual companions are trained guides who accompany others on their spiritual journeys, helping them to pay attention to signs of the Spirit’s activity that they might otherwise overlook.
Spiritual companions are midwives of the soul, equipped to be fully present during times of vulnerability and crisis, helping to bring forth what the Spirit is birthing, celebrating new life.
“For everything there is a season,” an ancient preacher wrote. As we journey through the seasons of our lives, we may feel compelled to intentionally enter into periods of spiritual discernment, especially during times of transition. How can we “live the questions” - as the poet Rainer Maria Rilke urged - that naturally arise when we have lost our spiritual equilibrium? How will we navigate the unavoidable pathways of grief? How will we choose which path to take when we stand at the threshold of a new season? How can we deepen our connection to the Divine? How can we serve others as conduits of God’s love and light in the world?
Some people choose to work with a spiritual companion for several months seeking discernment regarding a specific spiritual issue. Others engage in this shared holy work over the long term, journeying together for years. After an initial conversation to confirm your desire to enter into a covenant relationship for spiritual companionship, we will discuss the fee and calendar our monthly, hour-long sessions. Folks living in the Asheville area can meet with me in person at Homewood or at First Baptist Church of Asheville. I utilize Zoom for remote sessions.
WHO Needs a Spiritual companion?
As a member of Spiritual Directors International, I abide by the guidelines for ethical conduct established by SDI. I continue to nurture my own spiritual formation by engaging with a spiritual director on a monthly basis, participating in supervision, and utilizing peer support. Should you choose to enlist me as your spiritual companion, you can trust I will honor your dignity and maintain your confidentiality.
